Bring Back Your Spark – Naturopathic Medicine Case Study

Are you sick of feeling flat, exhausted and overwhelmed? Want to bring back your spark?

As a naturopath, I treat people from all walks of life – young, old, all shapes and sizes. Lack of energy, zip, mojo (whatever you want to call it) is the most common problem by far. They’ve lost their spark – their ‘get up’n go’. If that sound like you or someone you know read on. I’ll show you how a combo of naturopathic medicine and life coaching can bring back your spark ASAP.

Most come to see me for the tip of the iceberg, exhaustion, overwhelmed by life, often living on carbs, sugar or caffeine to give them energy for life. As a naturopath, pharmacist and life coach I delve below the surface to find what’s driving the show.

To find out where the problem lies I assess a few things. Number one is your base layer – your patterns of eating, thinking, moving, drinking, sleeping, recharging, these reveal a lot about how you’re showing up every day and have a huge impact on your health. Small things done often tend to do that, which is an “ah-ah” moment in itself.

As we grow older it’s only natural to get a bit comfortable with where we are in life, but with that often comes a sense that we have to be responsible now so we can live a little later. Life is happening right now and while it might be smart to have a nest egg for the future, that doesn’t mean you can’t live a little (or a lot) right now. Stop making excuses about why you can’t go on that big trip, volunteer in another country, or do that seemingly crazy thing you’ve always wanted to try. Life is a journey to be enjoyed, embraced, and explored and what good is it to wait to do all of those amazing things if you are too old to enjoy it? Don’t wait, do it now. – Huffpost

“Change your patterns, change your life” – Julie Smethurst

Once you’ve addressed your foundations you look for imbalances in your body. Signs, symptoms, testing, intuition and experience help me to dig these up. This where my 28 years of experience in health industry kicks in (yes I started when I was 5yo!). Here you may find a variety of problems ranging from digestive issues, gut infections, nutrient deficiencies, food intolerances, autoimmune diseases, thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue and the list goes on.

Now, it’s time to step back and construct a masterplan to suit you. This means knowing how different systems affect each other and seeing the big picture of what needs to be done and in what order. The art is in assessing where you are now and knowing the path to get to where you want to go. I guide you along step by step coaching and teaching you what needs to be done.

Ultimately my job is to empower you by teaching and guiding you along a path tailored to your needs, so you arrive at your desired destination. From here, amazing things will happen. I’ve seen people finally take that job, go out on that date, declutter what’s not working in their life and bring in what does.

It makes me smile all over every time I see a transformation from hopelessness to hope, with a spring their step and a sparkle in their eye. All I know is the world needs more people who’ve come alive.

They live longer happier lives. Having their spark back allows them to love bigger, live brighter and contribute more to making the world a better place. Who could ask for more than that!

Bring Back Your Spark Case Study – Treating Symptoms of Low Energy and Weight Loss Through Naturopathic Medicine

Here’s Lisa’s case study:

  • 44 year old female
  • Presented with low energy 3/10 and couldn’t lose weight even on a restrictive 1200 cal/day.
  • Poor stamina, weak muscles, could only manage walking once a week for exercise.
  • Bad PMS symptoms, heavy, clotted, cramping periods
  • Bloating after every meal and prone to constipation
  • Had an itchy rash that comes and goes on her forearms
  • History of glandular fever as a child that took 12 months to recover from
  • Diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis 10 years ago and was on thyroid medication prescribed by her doctor.
  • Family history of autoimmune disease Lupus
  • Presents as exhausted, dark circles under eyes, dragging herself along…lost her spark
  • Goals – lose 13kg, increase energy

Initial treatment:

  • Ran a new set of blood tests at GP
  • Tested for food intolerances
  • Salivary hormone testing
  • Increased water intake to 2.5L/day
  • Reduced caffeine drinks to ideally 1 per day
  • Green smoothie 1/day
  • Reduced alcohol to maximum 2 drinks on weekend
  • Daily deep abdominal breathing 2 minutes
  • Gave nutrients to maximise energy production

Second visit:

  • Blood tests from GP revealed low iron, B12, MTHFR (needing activated B’s)
  • Food intolerance results revealed problem digesting dairy, eggs, some grains
  • Started detox & gut/ liver reset programme
  • Salivary hormone results revealed extremely high cortisol on waking & extremely low after midday, explaining the energy crash after lunch and treated with nutrients, herbs and lifestyle recommendations
  • Low progesterone, high oestrogen detected via salivary testing and treated with nutrients & herbs. Addressing liver/gut and adrenals makes huge positive impact here.

Third visit:

  • Continued with anti-inflammatory diet
  • Swapped to sublingual bioidentical thyroid medication and titrated to most effective dose, now Lisa’s able to exercise daily without muscle soreness and has loads of stamina.
  • Spark is totally back in her eyes, dark circles have gone.
  • Periods are lighter, no PMS and sugar cravings, feeling emotionally more balanced
  • Fluid retention has gone, feeling energised and alert
  • Lost 5kg to date

Now Lisa’s body has been rebalanced by addressing her gut and hormonal imbalances (adrenals, thyroid, sex hormones, blood sugar) she is all set to repeat the new skills I’ve taught her often. Super easy now her energy’s back and she has great patterns of eating, drinking, moving, thinking, recharging and being.

Lost My Passion For Life

Lost My Passion For Life

Lost your spark, feeling exhausted, worn out? Been through a rough patch and can barely peel yourself away from your doona, find yourself saying “I’ve Lost My Passion For Life?”

Reliving mental pictures of the old days, when you had energy, motivation, a sense of humour, optimism? Now there’s cynicism, exhaustion and feeling too tired for life. – “Lost My Passion For Life”

Libido’s crashed, living on caffeine and sugar, endlessly running the kids around and grinding out the hours at work, feeling like a hamster on a wheel.

Find yourself staring in the mirror saying “I need to find my spark again?”

Don’t lose hope your spark is smouldering somewhere deep inside.

And no it’s not because you’re old…it’s because you’ve stopped looking after you. Everything else came first and it’s time for an overhaul.

It’s time to ignite the flame!

Don’t worry your family, friends and work colleagues will thank you for it.

“Find what sparks a light in you so that you in your own way can illuminate the world.” – Oprah

Imagine bounding out of bed as the alarm goes off, you’re jumping out of your skin so exercise’s no problem and you’re ready for anything that comes your way.

I know I lost my spark in my late twenties, working crazy hours, disrespecting my body with crappy foods, little exercise and bad relationships.

I got that ‘hamster wheel feeling’ and knew things had to change because I wasn’t staying there! I had to find my spark again….and I did.

Now I look back I see the patterns, thoughts, actions and mindset that got me there. When you know better you do better.

“Don’t lose the spark that makes you….you”  – CJ Peterson

Here’s six steps to finding your spark:

Step One: Clarity Is Central To Finding Your Spark

Take a moment to dream what you’d like your life to look like in five, ten or fiftenteen year’s time.

Make this an everyday practice.

Ahhh…. it feel delicious.

That’s the juice, that’s going to get you there through the ups and downs of life.

Now take stock of where you are now.

What’s three things that need to happen in next three months for you to move closer to your dream life?

Focus and consistency are the footsteps of clarity.

Let’s get walking my friend, to a spark filled life.

Step Two: Energy is Essential To Regaining Your Spark

Second stage of regaining your spark is energy.

Energy is foundational to everything.

It’s not just in your head, it’s in every cell of your body.

Having no energy is like being an inflatable toy that’s sprung a leak.

What’s zapping your energy?

  • Low in iron
  • making bad food choices
  • dehydrated
  • sleep deprived
  • gut problems
  • autoimmune disease
  • chronic pain
  • food intolerances….

If you answered yes to any of the above, you will benefit greatly from seeing a naturopath. I can make a huge difference to unravelling the causes. CLICK HERE to book online to get it sorted.

Step Three: Rituals Are Key To Recreating The Spark In Your Life

Stop living off wishful thinking, life’s too short to hope and pray that the planets will align and you’ll be jumping out of your skin and motivated each day.

So, increase the odds by setting morning and evening rituals.

Soon your rituals will become just what you do and you can change and refine them over time.

Need some help with establishing empowering rituals, come see me. Click here to book online.

Step Four: Decluttering Clears Out What’s Smoothering Your Spark

Yes, time to clear out all the rubbish in your life room by room, person by person, thought by thought, action by action.

Let go of what’s not working and what you’re no longer using.

Gift it, sell it, donate it, bin it, recycle it.

Make space for what does work and what’s coming.

Get the boxes and bags out and go to work.

Set a timer and a “this shit’s got to go” attitude.

You’ll feel lighter and freer for it.

Step Five: Recharging Is Critical To Finding and Maintaining Your Spark

When you’re running low or on empty, every time you give to others you’re giving away a piece of yourself and it hurts.

Think of it like filling up the car with petrol, it’s hard to go anywhere with no fuel.

When you’re overflowing it’s easy.

You cannot give what you don’t have.

Recharge using daily self care. Click here for loads of ideas.

Step Six: Empowerment Is The Glue To Finding And Keeping Your Spark

Self love equals self empowerment.

When you love yourself, you set standards for yourself and boundaries for others.

What does self love look like for you?

For me, it’s about taking care of myself by treating my body, mind and spirit like the gift they are?

I always say, the great leveller in life, “you come in with this body, you go out with this body, when it wears out so do you, so treat it with the respect it deserves.” – Julie Smethurst

Holistic Diet – Eating Healthy But Feel Crap?

Holistic Diet – Eating Healthy But Feel Crap?

Holistic Diet – Feeling like you’re eating all the right stuff but not getting anywhere. Here’s where your problem may lie. It’s not just about the food.

A 20-year study done at Harvard found your physical health is determined more by your relationships than the food you eat, exercise program you are on or genes you have inherited. Interesting! Which doesn’t mean drop eating well and exercising – it’s still important. Just acknowledging a third dimension, which you secretly suspected anyway.

Which brings me to who do you hang out with? Do they make you feel good and motivated or drained and sick? I liken it to catching a cold. You are more likely to catch something if you are hanging around with those who already have it.

If you want a happy, optimistic attitude about life, hang around others with this so you catch it. A great definition of a best friend is someone who brings out the best in you.

Remember the saying birds of a feather flock together. Well, a slight twist on that is pigeons hang out in flocks but eagles soar. There will be times in life when you need to side-step the mob to readjust as you evolve and strive for the best version of you.

You have many layers – physical, mental or emotional and spiritual. So, it’s only natural we need to strategically address each of these on our pathway to the best version of ourselves.

Years of indoctrination from mass media, your family, doctors, “experts,” and pretty much everyone can have you convinced that fat is a scary, inherently dangerous macronutrient – even if you can intellectually accept its place in the human diet. – Marks Daily Apple

Menopause Naturopathic Treatment

Menopause Naturopathic Treatment

Menopause Naturopathic Treatment – Where Are You On The Menopausal Spectrum? Where To From Here?

Just saying the word menopause, stirs up bad associations for many women – aging, endings, mood swings, hot flashes. Menopause is different for each woman, not unlike pregnancy, menstruation, and labor. For some it can be filled with intense pain, disruption, inner turmoil and isolation, and others can sail through it unhindered.

What is menopause?

Menopause is technically when you run out of your finite number of eggs, you were born with. After puberty, ovaries release mature eggs each month, during ovulation, which orchestrate your monthly hormonal cycle. If an egg isn’t fertilized, it’s expelled from your body. At menopause, this all stops.

Did you know our eggs and ovaries are extremely sensitive to chemicals and toxins in the environment? Women who smoke or exposed to many chemicals often have an earlier menopause than they would’ve normally.

Peri-menopause is transition proceeding menopause. Starting 8-10 years prior to menopause and it’s different for every woman. Some can start as early as the late thirties. Majority at 45 to 51 years and is filled with a wide variety of symptoms associated with a change of life – heavy periods, irregular periods, mood swings, PMS symptoms, poor memory, forgetfulness, feeling down, sad.

Post menopause occurs roughly 51 years plus, but is different for everyone. It’s defined by having no period for at least a year. There’s often a “post menopausal zest”, a burst of energy and disappearance of most menopausal symptoms.

During the menopausal phase, you’re naturally producing less oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. During peri-menopause and time of menstrual cessation, some unwanted and unpleasant physical symptoms can happen. Knowing what to expect can make it easier.
