Whose Business Are You In?

Life is full of challenges and staying in your own business will help you not to feel all the challenges in life, but much of our stress, frustration, and anxiety come from focusing on things beyond our control. According to Byron Katie, there are three types of business in life:

  • My business – Everything I have control over, including my thoughts, actions, and choices.
  • Your business – What others think, feel, or do, which is completely outside my control.
  • God’s business – Events beyond human control, such as natural disasters, aging, or death.

When I worry about someone else’s life or stress over things I can’t change, I step outside my own business. This habit leads to mental exhaustion and emotional distress.


The Power of Staying in Your Own Life

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “They should be more responsible,” “She needs to listen to me,” or “He should change his behavior”?

When we focus on other people’s actions, feelings, or decisions, we detach from ourselves. This can create feelings of loneliness, resentment, or frustration. Instead of trying to control others, what if we directed that energy inward?

If I spend my time mentally involved in someone else’s life, who is living mine? This question is a powerful reminder to return to my own path, my own choices, and my own personal growth.


A Simple Way to Reduce Stress

Next time you feel tension, irritation, or sadness, ask yourself:

  • Whose business am I in right now?

This simple question can shift your perspective instantly. You might even laugh at how often your mind drifts into things you can’t control.

By refocusing on your own choices, thoughts, and actions, you reclaim your energy and reduce stress naturally. Over time, you may find that life flows more smoothly when you stay in your own lane.
