Why Are We Now the Autoimmune Era? How to Cure Autoimmune Disease Naturally
Autoimmune diseases are exponentially on the rise. Continue reading to find out how to How to Cure Autoimmune Disease Naturally.
At last count, world incidence of autoimmune diseases has increased by an average of 19% over the last 30 years. Highest increases are in Western countries, pointing to environmental factors as major cause, rather than genetics. Coeliac disease, myasthenia gravis and diabetes type 1 had the biggest increases in developed countries.
Are you next on the hit list or do you already have an autoimmune disease?
Asthma, eczema, psoriasis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Grave’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, diabetes type 1, Addison’s disease, multiple sclerosis, coeliac …..the list goes on and on. There are 80 recognised autoimmune diseases and many more that have a questionable autoimmune component.
What is an autoimmune disease?
An autoimmune disease is when your immune system starts to attack it’s own cells, tissues and/or organs, causing inflammation and damage.
Did you know once you have one autoimmune disease you can get many?
Researchers aren’t sure what causes autoimmune diseases, but theories involve genetic predispositions triggered by immune responses to chronic viral, bacterial or parasitic infections, responses to toxins, chemicals and poorly digested food proteins.
From a natural medicine perspective, we know the gut is 80% of our immune system, so food intolerances, leaky gut, gut infections and stress have a huge impact on developing and driving autoimmune diseases.
Do autoimmune diseases run in your family?
I know I haven’t escaped. I have thrombocytopenia, which has been labelled idiopathic or of unknown cause. It produces low levels of platelets, which are responsible for clotting your blood. It was first picked up when I was pregnant, over 16 years ago. After my own investigations, I realised I had had developed it several years prior. It had been the reason for a mysterious purplish-red rash, like pin-point bleeding on my thighs which had taken weeks to resolve. At the time, I was super stressed, working long hours, eating badly and was recovering from a lingering virus. I’d gone to the doctor and she’d told me that it was nothing and to apply a cortisone cream.
That so-called nothing was a big clue to a huge inflammatory-immune response where my own body was attacking my platelets. Many years and lots of study later I found my own answers – food intolerances, leaky gut, poor diet, lack of movement, chronic high stress, chronic antibiotic and anti-inflammatory use. The diagnosis was the tip of the iceberg and below were the deep roots of causation, that took years to resolve to lead me to self-healing and halt the progression.
Autoimmune diseases have touched many other members of my family – Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, breast cancer, nephritis. Changing my inner terrain was crucial to avoid adding these names to my own list. One autoimmune disease enough for me!
Why are autoimmune diseases on the rise?
The past 100 years has bought about huge changes in our environment, a plethora of new foods (genetically modified, preservative, additives), chemicals and toxins in a very short period of time evolutionarily. Our genes haven’t keep up with the changes, there is a mismatch between our DNA and the DNA of the world around us. Overall our bodies don’t know how to handle it all and have started to attack our our body tissue, through mistaken identity.
In recent studies it has been found 33% of our predisposition is through genetics and 77% is from environment, which converts to daily choices that are mostly in our control.
What can we do?
Did you know to be officially diagnosed your body has to destroy a significant amount of tissue (thyroid, gut, joints, nerves…). Of course, this doesn’t happen overnight.
Why wait until you’re sick enough to be labelled with an autoimmune disease?
I believe in early detection and identifying the initial stages of an autoimmune disease before extensive damage has been done. I see it often. Antibody levels are borderline or on the rise and many are on a watch and wait protocol from their doctors.
What are you waiting for? Waiting until enough damage has been done to officially label it?
Natural medicine has tools to address and clean up the drivers of autoimmune diseases, which can slow or halt the progression of the autoimmune diseases.
